What Is a Swinger?
A swinger is someone in a couple or relationship who, with their partner's full knowledge and consent, engages in sexual activity with other people — usually other couples or singles met through a trusted lifestyle community like SecretFantasy. The lifestyle is built on honesty, communication and mutual consent between everyone involved, not secrecy.
Common Swinger & Lifestyle Terms
- Lifestyle / The Lifestyle
- A polite, widely used umbrella term for swinging and consensual non-monogamy. Many South African swingers describe themselves as "in the lifestyle" rather than using the word swinger directly.
- Soft Swap
- Intimacy with another couple or single that stops short of penetrative sex — kissing, touching and more, but with a clear line. Boundaries are agreed in advance.
- Full Swap
- Includes penetrative sex with another partner. Like soft swap, full swap only happens with the enthusiastic consent of everyone involved, agreed before anything starts.
- Same Room / Separate Room
- Describes whether a couple plays together in the same space as the people they're swapping with (same room), or in separate spaces (separate room). A key boundary couples discuss upfront.
- Unicorn
- A single woman who joins a couple for a shared experience. Called a unicorn because genuine, drama-free single women in the lifestyle are in high demand and can feel rare to find.
- Hotwife
- A wife who, with her partner's full knowledge and enthusiastic support, dates or plays with other men — sometimes with her partner present, sometimes not, depending on the couple's agreed dynamic.
- MFM / FMF
- Shorthand for a threesome dynamic — one man with two women (FMF) or one woman with two men (MFM). Also the basis for "throuple" account types on lifestyle platforms.
- Vouching / Vouch
- A trust system where existing members confirm they've genuinely met and had a good experience with another member. SecretFantasy uses vouching to help keep the community safe and reduce fake profiles.
- Munch
- A casual, non-sexual social meetup — often at a restaurant or coffee shop — where lifestyle members get to know each other before deciding whether to meet again in a play setting.
- Play Party
- A private or club-hosted event where consenting adults socialise and, if they choose, play together in designated spaces. See our swinger parties guide.
- Dogging
- Outdoor or public-adjacent meetups, typically at pre-arranged, discreet locations. See our dedicated dogging in South Africa guide.
- Naughty Camping
- A South African take on lifestyle getaways — couples and groups combining camping trips with the lifestyle, popular in the Western Cape, Mpumalanga and along the coast. See our naughty camping guide.
- NSA
- "No Strings Attached" — an encounter or connection with no expectation of an ongoing relationship beyond what's explicitly agreed.
- Open Relationship
- A broader form of consensual non-monogamy than swinging, which can include individual dating or relationships outside the couple, not necessarily shared or done together.
